After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1984, John worked for six years in small animal practice before undertaking further clinical training at Cambridge where he gained his FRCVS in 1993. John was appointed as lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at Liverpool University and became Head of Small Animal Studies in 1997. He then became an RCVS recognised specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 1995 and a Diplomate of the ECVS in 1997.  In 2000, John founded a referral practice in Cheshire which he headed up for over 12 years. In 2016 he joined Vets Now Manchester as a Clinical Surgeon and as National Surgical Lead.

In 2000 John was awarded the BSAVA Simon award for contributions to small animal surgery. He has most recently contributed to the second edition of Tobias and Johnston's Textbook of Veterinary Surgery: Small Animals.

John is former chair of BSAVA’s Congress Committee and chief examiner for the RCVS Diploma in Surgery.

In 2012 John was appointed honorary professor at the University of Liverpool. He has a keen interest in all aspects of soft tissue surgery, particularly emergency surgery, damage control surgery, portosystemic shunts and minimally invasive surgery.

John is active on the CPD lecture circuit and regularly speaks in the UK, Europe, and the USA. He has been an invited speaker at over 100 national and international CPD events and over 50 national and international conferences.

John has two Border Terriers and has a keen interest in wildlife and landscape photography, hill walking and road cycling.
